Whanganui District Council provides $100,000 in climate funding for eight community projects

Eight community projects in Whanganui have shared $100,000 in funding from Whanganui District Council’s Community Climate Action Fund.

The fund supports not-for-profit projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or increase community resilience to the impacts of climate change.

The projects that received funding are

Tallapoohi Bush Park ($20,000)
Braided River Trust ($18,500)
Traditional Food Crops Research Trust ($17,500)
Eco-Schools ($11,500)
New Zealand Rocha ($10,500)
Ngapela Kaihu Land Trust ($10,000)
Whanganui Sustainable Development Trust ($9,000)
House of Science ($3,000)
The fund is undergoing a two-year trial and is currently under review. Caroline Arrowsmith, the commission’s climate change advisor, said the fund is an important part of the commission’s efforts to empower communities to take climate action.

“Auditors will review the strategy’s progress from planning to implementation,” Arrowsmith said.” In our climate change strategy, we are committed to helping our communities take climate action, and the Community Climate Action Fund is an important part of our efforts to achieve this goal.
