Sam Kanter joins Japanese club Suntory, could still play for All Blacks

All Blacks captain Sam Cane will join Japanese club Suntory for the 2024 season, New Zealand Rugby announced on Friday. Cane, who has played for the Super Rugby Chiefs since 2012, will become the first All Blacks captain to play in Japan.

Kane will still be able to represent the All Blacks at international level next year as the Rugby Championship and British and Irish Lions tour will take place before his contract with Suntory begins.

Kane said he was excited about the opportunity to play in Japan.” I’m looking forward to new challenges and experiencing a different culture,” he said.” I am also excited to continue playing for the All Blacks next year.

New Zealand Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson said Kane’s decision was “positive for both the All Blacks and Suntory.”” Robinson said, “Sam is a world class player and his experience will be a valuable asset to Suntory.” We are also delighted that he will still be playing for the All Blacks next year.

Kane’s move to Japan is the latest in a trend of top international players moving to Japan. In recent years, the Japanese Rugby Union first team has attracted players such as Beauden Barrett, Rieko Ioane and Brodie Retallick.
